Travel Diary-The New Hotel in Athens, Greece

I have to say that Athens is one of the most amazing cities we've ever visited and one of the reasons that we loved it so much was that we decided to stay at The New Hotel.   Located in the heart of Athens, the New Hotel was a great home base for exploring this ancient city. It's situated just a few blocks away from Syntagma Square, tons of fabulous restaurants, and is walking distance from the Acropolis, right in the middle of picturesque Plaka. ( And Plaka is definitely where you want to stay.)

Know formerly as the Olympic Palace hotel (built in the 1950s), the New Hotel is the product of renowned designers, Fernando and Humberto Campana. They really paid close attention to all of the details and themes with fabulous luxury rooms, a delectable restaurant, and a stunning rooftop art lounge.

We arrived at the hotel via Welcome Pickups.  This was by far the easiest and least stressful alternative for travel to and from the airport and the hotel.  Our tour guide was super friendly and was so informative about all of the landmarks and even pulled the car over twice at scenic areas to point out different points of interest.  It was fantastic.

Upon arriving at the hotel, we were met with a warm and friendly reception. The hotel interior is very eclectic, drawing on esthetics from modern street art and contemporary design.  The designers used remnants from the previous hotel throughout and also a "play on words".  It was amazing just wandering throughout the hotel, wondering what you would see next.

The 79-rooms are divided into three distinct styles.  Each showcases authentic Greek tradition developing around the Greek folklore themes of Karagiozis, the evil eye.  The rooms are equipped with gold shaded mirrors, floor to ceiling bamboo walls and floors, full-length windows with amazing black-out shades, sculpture-like bathrooms, and scrumptious branded toiletries.  (I wish that I could find the olive oil toiletries--I would buy them by the case!!)

The view from our room
After a day of wandering around Plaka and visiting several ancient sites, we decided to enjoy the restaurant located inside of our hotel, The New Taste.  It definitely did not disappoint.  The restaurant is intimate with breathtaking views. The restaurant offers local, fresh foods, a fantastic wine list, and a fabulous wait-staff.

A few of the delicacies we enjoyed--

Greek Salad
Asparagus and Zucchini Salad with Basil Vinaigrette
Salmon with Quinoa
Seabass with Potatoes
The restaurant is located on the 7th floor of the hotel along with the art rooftop bar.  Sadly, it was raining the night we ate at the restaurant so we weren't able to enjoy the rooftop bar. It did stop raining long enough for me to snap a few photos of the breathtaking views of the Acropolis and the surrounding areas.

The New Hotel is located at 16, Filellinon Str. 10557 Syntagma Ssq. Athens, Greece.

You can also find them on Facebook and Instagram.

We will definitely visit The New Hotel again the next time we visit Athens.  The location, rooms, food, and people were fantastic.  So if you are planning on visiting Athens, check them out.  I think you will love it as much as we did.
