Make Your Own Simmering Christmas Potpourri Using Essential Oils

Simmering Christmas Potpourri is one of those delicious smelling treats that I promise you are completely going to love. Once it starts simmering your entire house will smell amazing.  It's so simple to make and can be adjusted to your own tastes.  Also, the longer it simmers the better it smells.  I just love to have a pot on my stove filling the house with all of the aromas of Christmas.

I started using a few drops of essential oils in my simmering potpourri to enhance some of the flavors.  In this potpourri, I used Wild Orange, Cedarwood, and Ginger essential oils.  Just a few drops of each to really bring out the holiday aromas.  (You could also use Cinnamon, but I read that diffusing Cinnamon essential oil is not good if you have pets, so I skipped it this time--please let me know if I'm wrong.)

If you don't want to use essential oils, don't worry.  It will still smell fantastic,  just not as strong.  I usually always make this in an oven-safe pot just in case I need all of the burners on my stove.  I just turn my stove on the warming setting, place the pot in the oven and use a wooden spoon to crack the oven just a little.  Violá--simmering potpourri in the oven.  This would also make a fantastic Christmas gift.  Just gather all of the ingredients into a nice gift bag or basket (leaving the fruit whole) and you've got a beautiful gift.  Even better would be to add the bottles of essential oils.

Simmering Christmas Potpourri

  • 1 tablespoon cloves
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 gallon water
  • **3 drops of each essential oils--Wild Orange, Cedarwood, and Ginger

  1. Place all ingredients in a large pot and bring to a boil.  Reduce the heat to simmer and allow to simmer as long as you desire.  Add water as needed.
